IBS is important
It is one of the most common disorders of the digestive system and, although it may be little more than an occasional nuisance for some people, for other sufferers it can have a debilitating effect on their life both at home and work.
So what causes IBS?
The short answer is that the precise cause of IBS isn’t known. A number of factors are likely to be important, and one of them appears to be a link with stress. Situations such as family problems, work stress or exams may trigger symptoms in some people.
There is no 'cure' for IBS
Unfortunately, conventional medical approaches to IBS management may be unsatisfactory for more than half of the patients. But the good news is that hypnosis can help! And that's not just hype. Medical researchers and professionals, and the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, (NICE) acknowledge that hypnotherapy is effective treatment - even for patients who did not respond to standard medical treatment.
The effects of IBS hypnotherapy last!
And the news gets better and better: Medical research also suggests that for most patients the therapeutic gains from gut orientated hypnotherapy may be maintained for years after treatment had been concluded.
Why does hypnotherapy work so well for IBS?
It helps in two main ways:
It can help sufferers to influence and gain control of their gut function.
It can help to re-programme the subconscious mind to deal positively with the situations, anxiety and stress responses that trigger and aggravate IBS.
So, how many sessions of hypnotherapy are necessary to treat IBS?
Realistically, a total of at least three or four sessions are likely to be necessary – depending on progress and how chronic the condition is. Sessions are usually spread over a period of about two months. The first session would normally be expected to last about 1.5 hours. Subsequent sessions would be about 1 hour in length. Some benefit is often experienced soon after the first session, and research evidence shows that up to 80% of clients may experience an improvement of up to 80% in symptom severity.
